1906 Club

Introduction & History
One of the great benefits of being a Harwich & Dovercourt Golf Club member is that the club was founded in 1906! The 1906 Club is made up of golf clubs that celebrated their Centenary in 2006. The 1906 Club is an association of those Clubs founded in 1906 who have agreed to offer courtesy of their courses to Members of other golf clubs that were formed in 1906. The Founder of the 1906 Club was Mr Tony Boddy, Ex Honorary Secretary of Harwich & Dovercourt Golf Club in Essex. The inaugural meeting was held at Horsforth Golf Club on August 12th, 2005. Not all Clubs established in 1906 are members of the 1906 Club. Of the sixty plus UK golf clubs that were founded in 1906, by May 2006, the number of founder Members Clubs stood at 40. Since then, the numbers of Member Clubs have grown and currently stands at 47 (c 2024).

So, the opportunity exists to have a day out, visit a 1906 club whilst on holiday or plan a trip with friends. There are some stunningly attractive and picturesque courses available to members. The 1906 Club Terms and conditions are outlined below; the 1906 Club is very much a reciprocal arrangement and members of other 1906 clubs are very welcome when they visit us. Please extend to such visitors the kind of welcome we would expect when we visit their courses.

Code Of The 1906 Club
All Member Clubs have agreed to offer golfing privileges to fellow 1906 Club Members under specified conditions. Hence, subject to the traditions and internal commitments of each Member Club, (e.g. competitions, club matches, etc), each participating 1906 Member Club will give courtesy of its course to all bona fide members of other 1906 Clubs located OVER 50 miles distant as the crow flies. Members of Harwich & Dovercourt Golf Club may therefore apply to play at any 1906 Club Member that is located more than 50 miles from Harwich. (It is possible that by mutual agreement with certain golf clubs, this condition may be waived).

Frequency Of Visits
No member would be expected to visit any one club more than once per annum except if a particular agreement is reached between individual clubs.

Limit of Members on any One Visit
The number of golfers on any one visit is limited to a maximum of eight.

The Procedure
Members wishing to visit a 1906 Club should contact the Secretary of the club they wish to visit and check availability for the date and time they would like to play. A number of clubs are unable to accept visitors at weekends and some mid-week restrictions may also apply; the list of Member Clubs gives a GUIDE ONLY regarding restrictions where these may apply. Also, please note that, depending on the time of year, a small number of clubs may charge a reduced green fee instead of a ‘courtesy’ round.
It is the Players responsibility to ensure that the available Date and Tee Time with the host club’s acceptance of the booking made under the 1906 arrangement regarding free golf (or otherwise) is accepted. A letter of introduction (e-mail communication) must be obtained from the Harwich & Dovercourt Golf Club Secretary /Office for presentation to the Secretary for the golf club being visited. Evidence of a visiting player’s handicap certificate will also be required at the host club.
